These are fire ants and this morning while I was standing outside out tent (washing my face in a basin of warm water that one of our attendants brought) I felt a little tickle on my leg (I was still wearing my pj's) and went inside. While inside I felt more little 'tickles' which were feeling more like stings by now...on my legs and when I looked down, there were ants on my sox so I peeled them off cuz it seemed like I couldn't kill them...then I started feeling more stings up my legs so I whipped off my pants and sure enough...a bunch of fire ants were climbing my legs biting me so I was hopping around calling for Dennis to help me and he was slapping and killing these things that just seemed to stick tight to whatever they were attached too! Ugh! It was freaky! AND, our attendants had yet another good laugh at my expense. I didn't mind, I thought it was funny too...AFTER it was over and we were on our way to Zanzibar that is. I'm fine...I put some essential oils on my legs and didn't feel a thing after that. I never thought I'd have THAT experience in Africa. I was more worried about the mosquitoes and Tse Tse flies! (...and the lions, elephants, hyenas, rhinos, buffalo, cheetahs and leopards.)
They look kind of harmless from here...NOT!
